Five Simple Cybersecurity Tips

Today, learn five simple cybersecurity tips in regards to downloading files, protecting your network, backing up data, creating passwords, and choosing the right security solutions for your firm.

Downloading Files:

Watch out for malicious files and software. Don’t download carelessly or click on shady links. Learn how to spot a phishing attempt- one of the most common forms of cyber-attacks. And always be suspicious of an email that asks for personal information, as the majority of companies will never contact you requesting personal information through email.

Networks:

Be sure to only use secure networks and make sure that your personal home network is kept safe with the necessary protections, such as firewalls and encryption information. Also, before using public Wi-Fi networks, keep in mind that they are risky, and can potentially lead to unauthorized access to your sensitive information.

Disaster Recovery and Backup:

Disaster recovery and backup is becoming one of the most important components of a cybersecurity plan. Be sure to backup important data and have a DR plan in place. Update the data backup regularly and store it offsite. In addition, make sure to secure your backed up information with encryption and password protection and check on it from time to time to ensure it’s intact.

Passwords:

Use complicated passwords and change them every several months. Don’t share passwords and/or write them down and keep them where others can’t find them. Ideally, every password should be unique and never be reused.

Security Solutions:

Invest in the right security solutions. Multi-layer solutions offer a better way to keep your firm secure. Always use two factor authentication when possible and be aware of socially engineered threats. Employ reliable antivirus software with finely tuned security settings for additional protection.
